Hebrew Unicode Characters

(obiously not the Unicode Names nor the quote from Genesis)

The main reason for compiling this table is that it can be helpful when editing a web presentation in order to change (as in removing non-essential characters from a Masoretic Text quote) or in editing Hebrew words in your own text. You can, for example, remove accents from a Hebrew word intended to stand all by itself by observing which HTML Decimal Codes in the tables below need to be removed from a webpage.

Note: Since very few people have a Hebrew Masoretic font installed on their computers, the font used in these tables (EzraSILW) is being served to you from this website in order to display all the accents and other characters correctly! However, I still recommend that you download and install both of these free fonts for your own use: Ezra SIL 2.51 (Zip file); which you can read about here: Ezra SIL Hebrew Font. You should also get the SBL Hebrew Font from the Society of Biblical Literature.

The tables below contain all the unicode characters relevant to the Old Testament Hebrew Text (and their HTML Decimal Codes); which happens to be used in the webpages at academic-bible.org for displaying their copy of the BHS. I've also added a quotation of Genesis 1:1-19 based upon their online text of the Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia. If you do not have the SBL Hebrew font installed under your operating system, it will default to the EzraSILW font (or to some other font if the Ezra SIL font fails to function).

The decimal range of the Hebrew Block of the Unicode Consortium consists of &#1424 (U+0590) through &#1535 (U+5FF), but the first one (as well as various ranges listed below) is "Reserved"; and not used here.

The following is an excerpt from the Hebrew Masoretic Text of Genesis 1:1-19 as found in the BHS (Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia) version; based upon the online text at academic-bible.com; using the SBL Hebrew font if it is installed, otherwise, it will use the Ezra SIL webfont from my website.
The YELLOW highlighted phrases are translated into English as “one day” (or day one, yôm ʾechād, יֹום אֶחָד; not first), “day second” (yôm šēnî, יֹום שֵׁנִי), “day third” (yôm šǝlîšî, יֹום שְׁלִישִׁי) and “day fourth” (yôm rǝvîʿî, יֹום רְבִיעִי), and you will also see that each of those is preceded by the same phrase highlighted in LIGHT GREEN (wayǝhî-ʿerev wayǝhî-vōqer, meaning: And there was evening and there was morning):

Genesis 1:1-19

Footnotes

1[Return to Table] When Pe is used after a Sof Pasuq punctuation mark (like this: ׃ פ), it indicates the end of a logical section (or paragraph) according to the Masoretes.
